Pride Month is a time to honour the lives, stories, and remarkable contributions of LGBTIQA+ individuals to Australia’s rich cultural, social, and economic landscape.
At the Y, we celebrate Pride as more than a moment – it’s a movement. Across our community centres, gyms, schools, youth programs, and boardrooms, we’re committed to building a world where everyone feels safe, seen, and celebrated for who they are.
We believe that education and awareness are at the heart of inclusion. That’s why the Y proudly supports organisations and individuals to better understand the unique needs of the LGBTIQA+ community and to take real steps towards creating inclusive, respectful environments.
Pride Month is also a wonderful opportunity for families and young people to join in, reflect, learn, and show their support. Here are a few simple but powerful ways to celebrate together:
Start conversations at home
- Talk with your children or young people about what Pride means, why it matters, and how we can all help make our communities safer and more welcoming. These conversations build understanding and compassion.
Be an ally every day
- Small actions – like using inclusive language, challenging stereotypes, using personal pronouns, or standing up against bullying – make a big difference. Let young people see what acceptance looks like in everyday life.
Read inclusive books and watch diverse stories
- Seek out books, films or shows that feature LGBTIQA+ characters and themes. Representation helps children and young people learn about different identities and family structures in a positive way.
Join a local Pride event
- Many communities host family-friendly Pride celebrations in June and throughout the year. Whether it’s a community picnic, workshop, performance or a parade – showing up is a powerful way to show support and say, “you belong.”
