For many young people, the traditional classroom setting doesn’t always align with their learning styles or life experiences. Recognising this, The Y Whittlesea introduced Invigor8ing Education, a hands-on, semester-long program designed specifically for Year 8 students who are at risk of disengaging from school. This initiative offers a supportive environment where students can explore vocational pathways, develop essential life skills, and rediscover the value of education.
Invigor8ing Education is a partnership program supported by The Y Whittlesea, City of Whittlesea Youth Services, Whittlesea Youth Commitment and Hume Whittlesea Local Learning Network (HWLLEN).
A practical approach to learning
Invigor8ing Education provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in real-world work environments. Participants can choose between two streams: Trades or Community and Leisure.
Trades Stream
Students gain hands-on experience in areas like carpentry, painting, and decorating at Melbourne Polytechnic’s Epping campus.
Community and Leisure Stream
Students engage in roles within hospitality, sport and recreation, and childcare at facilities such as Y Leisure City, Mill Park Leisure, and TRAC.
These experiences are supported by youth workers who guide students throughout the program, helping them build confidence and resilience in a safe and inclusive setting.
Building confidence and essential skills
Beyond vocational training, the program focuses on developing transferable skills that are crucial for both school and the workplace. Students enhance their communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities, while growing their independence and sense of purpose. Families and schools receive regular updates, fostering a circle of support around each young person.
At the end of the program, participants graduate with a Certificate and a Statement of Achievement – tangible recognition of their growth and accomplishments.
Voices from the program:
- “I learnt 3 important lifeguard signals to use on the pool deck.” – May
- “I enjoyed communicating with members of the community.” – Deborah
- “I enjoyed painting and learning how to sketch using the lightbox.” – Aqeel
These testimonials reflect the joy of learning through doing – and the pride that comes from achieving something new!
