When you think of the YMCA, it’s hard not to picture the iconic dancefloor moves immortalised by the Village People in the ’70s. How many times have you struck those familiar poses—Y, M, C, A?
But beyond the catchy tune, have you ever paused to reflect on the deeper meaning of that song? The Village People wrote it to celebrate the YMCA – the Young Men’s Christian Association – as a symbol of inclusivity, community, and acceptance. In 2024, while the world has evolved, the Y’s commitment to inclusivity and safety remains steadfast.
A Foundation of Vital Community Support
For more than a century, the YMCA has been a cornerstone of communities worldwide, fostering growth, resilience, and connection. With a presence in over 120 countries, the Y is recognised as the largest and oldest not-for-profit youth organisation in the world.
In 2019, the YMCA rebranded as “the Y” to reflect its commitment to diversity and to be more relevant to young people. The new name and logo were created through an inclusive process that involved hundreds of YMCA staff, volunteers, and participants.
At Y Whittlesea, we’re proud to continue this tradition. We offer a diverse range of services that cater to every stage of life—early childhood education, school holiday programs, health and wellbeing initiatives, disability services, and education and pathways to employment. Every program we deliver is designed to uplift and empower individuals, creating vibrant and thriving communities.
Why We Do What We Do
At the heart of Y Whittlesea lies our vision: to create a better world, with and for young people. Our mission is to empower individuals to build a just, equitable, and inclusive society where everyone can thrive in mind, body, and spirit.
The values of inclusivity and acceptance that the Village People celebrated in their song are embedded in everything we do.
Safeguarding Our Future
Safety is a fundamental part of our mission. We believe that every child and young person deserves to feel safe, valued, and heard. Safeguarding is not just a policy for us—it’s a culture. At Y Whittlesea, we implement rigorous safeguarding practices, regularly updating our policies to reflect best practices and ensure the wellbeing of all participants in our programs.
Our staff are extensively trained to uphold these standards, understanding that their role goes beyond care—it’s about acting in the best interests of young people and vulnerable individuals every day.
Creating an Inclusive Community
As a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) registered organisation we provide programs and services to those who require extra supports in their daily lives. We help people with a disability to achieve their goals and live their life to the fullest, becoming a vibrant part of their community.
Elevating Youth Voices
Young people are the heart of the Y. At Y Whittlesea, we amplify their voices and provide them with platforms to lead and inspire. Through initiatives like LA Stars (Disability leadership group) and our Staff Advisory Committee we empower young individuals to influence our policies, programs, and plans.
Discover the Y Difference
Y Whittlesea is more than a service provider—it’s a movement dedicated to creating a brighter, safer, and more inclusive future. Just as the Village People’s song celebrated the Y as a place of community and belonging, we invite you to be part of our mission to empower and uplift.
