Did you know that the YMCA was the birthplace of the invention of Basketball?
Yep! On this day, 112 years ago, a YMCA fitness instructor, James Naismith, invented the game. A Canadian farm boy, James Naismith developed the game at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts! Inspired by the need for an indoor activity during winter, Naismith invented Basketball, a game that combined creativity and teamwork.
On December 21, 1891, two baskets, and one ball in a YMCA gym witnessed the birth of Basketball.
Today marks a special celebration, having been declared World Basketball Day early this year by the United Nations. Basketball becomes the first team sport, to have a recognised day to celebrate its rich history and global significance.
At Y Whittlesea we are proud to provide a number of basketball programs from children in our ‘Hoop Stars’ program, to adults in our social competitions and our inclusive WRAP basketball competition.
At WRAP basketball we have 40 players who enjoy playing basketball on a weekly basis to socialise, keep active and have some fun. The inclusive nature of basketball fosters social interaction, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. Moreover, it empowers individuals, building confidence and resilience, while breaking down barriers and challenging societal stereotypes.
So no better day than today to get out on the court and shoot some hoops for World Basketball Day!
